Day 5: More detail in the Leirhnjukur lava field

The colors on the solidified lava are due to mosses and lichens and other ground plants. It's hard to see, but there is a walking path winding all through here. We walked right up to the volcanic cinder cone in the upper right corner. When I took this shot, I was standing at the edge of a lava tube--a hole that was at least my height in depth. From the tube to the cinder cone is probably half a mile. All along this path I fell like at any moment, the Earth could open up and swallow me. This is the place where I can honestly say that I peed on lava. ;-)
